What’s the STORY; Artist’s Proof?

Author LANDER MARKS is giving away 10 copies of the hardcover book: ARTIST’S PROOF, every day in June.
When asked why are you doing this? Marks replied, ” I feel like we all need alittle escape during these tough times and what better way than in a good mystery. For those that can’t afford $24.95, the book is free, all you pay is the shipping/handling.”
In the first three days of June, thirty copies have gone to good homes. Each day Marks provides some clues, details or questions, to pique the reader’s interest. Those following her on TWITTER @LANDERMARKS have included book reviewers, publicists and other authors, intriqued by the thought of an author giving away her own book, not in single promo copies, but the hard cover first edition.
Marks has offered to autograph and personalize the book at the recipient’s request.

The story of Artist’s Proof is a mystery involving stolen art, international cruises and the strong will of characters DJ Singer and Shannon Phillips. “Rarely do you find a book written by a female, starring a female antagonist and female protagonist, and the men are cast in supporting roles.”–Lander Marks
“Kate and I watched the other guests meander in from the pool deck, marveling at their ivory skin starting to turn pink as they sought shelter from the hot Mexican sun. Barmaids made the rounds, offering cheap champagne as the lounge turned gallery filled with art mavens.
“Welcome to all of you,” Shannon said, tapping the podium microphone. “My name is Shannon Phillips. I’m the auctioneer for Monte Carlo House. We are the premier art auction on land or sea. There are some familiar faces here today: Selma, Dr. Thomas, and Miss Louise. Let me cover some auction protocol and then we’ll start the bidding.”
“That’s her,” I whispered to Kate.
“She must work out.”
“More like worked on.”
A hand shot up from the middle of the room. “Ah, Shannon, will ya’ll be showin’ any Dalis today?” Selma drawled.
“Just the frames you put your little green dot on.”
Miss Bayou Babe of 1959 lifted her rotund shape off the loveseat and waddled across the room. Finding all the Salvador Dali lithographs displayed together along the back wall, she made a dramatic exercise of placing a dot on every single print.
“Folks, the first piece I offer you today,” Shannon said, pulling the purple damask drape away from the easel, “is by Sol Fleming.” The spotlight gave the image a back glow, creating a three-dimensional effect. Shannon continued, “Monte Carlo House has been the exclusive agent for Fleming since 1947, when he first arrived on the art scene. I’ll open the bidding at five thousand dollars for The Prophet, a significant etching from his ‘Bible Series.’ Notice the father figure in the top corner looking down on the village people.” She pointed to the painting. “Do I have five thousand?”
I signaled her with a bid for the five grand.
“Okay, five thousand, do I have six?” A card flashed. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a funny hand wave from my opposition.
“Fifty-five hundred from bidder 129. Come on folks, we’re just warming up. This is a cornerstone piece for any serious collection. Do I hear six thousand?”
More cards popped up. The pace quickened. A new bidder jumped into the fray. My adrenaline surged with her nod.
“Seven thousand.” From the middle of the lounge, a hand waved as signals flashed around the room. Eight, nine, ten . . . the race was on.
“Twelve thousand. Thank you number 137.”
I counted three bidders, including myself.
“Who is going to take The Prophet home?” Shannon bullied the crowd. Her challenge hung in the air like a stink bomb. Arms folded and held. I counted to ten, then waved my number.
“I’ve got thirteen thousand, do I hear fourteen?” she said, staring at Mr. 137. He looked away, ignoring her glare.
“Thirteen five?” She directed her glance at bidder 154 in the opposite corner, leaning back in his chair, arms folded across his beer belly, ‘no way’ emblazoned across his forehead.
“Going once. Going twice. Sold to number 139 for thirteen thousand dollars. Congratulations.”

“May I offer you lovely ladies another glass of champagne?” the handsome bartender asked Kate and me. We tapped the plastic cups in a mock toast and circled the room, looking at the artwork displayed on tables, booth benches, and in stacks along the walls. In the background, I heard the bartender spewing company propaganda to anyone who would listen.
“Monte Carlo House is the largest art auction company in the world,” he continued. “They do auctions all over the world. Sonneberg and Kingston & Gillette International combined don’t sell as many, and they’re much more expensive. This artwork is the real deal.”
Shannon approached us as I waited in line to pay for The Prophet.
“This is a great buy,” she commented, turning her attention to Kate. “I don’t think we’ve met.”
“Kate Morrison, D.J.’s conscience.”
“D.J., you should be arrested for stealing this piece,” Shannon laughed. “Kate, do you invest in art?”
“No, I leave that to the experts,” she replied, nodding in my direction.
“Well, I’ve got the best collection of rare original paintings, limited edition prints, and one-of-a-kind pencil sketches by Mirό, Tarkay, Dali, Chagall, Max, and Picasso.” She pressed her business cards into our hands. “If there’s anything in particular you’d like to see, please let me know.”
“Oh, we will!” Kate pushed me toward the door, snickering when Shannon Phillips was out of view.

A cloudless electric blue sky met the turquoise horizon of the Pacific as dusk approached. The orange swipe of setting sun cut across the vista like my favorite Rothko painting. The balmy breeze blew my hair into the zinc oxide, sticking the wisps to my lips. I stood on the top deck of the S.S. Hollandays, chugging its way south along the Mexican Riviera, enjoying the late afternoon view as Kate screeched in my ear.
“Are you nuts? Spending thirteen thousand dollars on that picture?”
“You sound like the guys at work. I’ll tell you the same thing I tell them. I invest in art because I can enjoy looking at the pictures while they appreciate. Cars are fun to drive but they take more money and ten times longer to return any value. Stocks, bonds and gold are boring.”
“I don’t get why this print is worth so much money?” Kate protested.
“It’s a hand-signed limited edition. Number 111. Etchings are so intricate very few artists do them anymore. First, they draw on a coated metal plate. The plate is laid in a tray of acid that eats at the exposed areas of the drawing. The ink sticks in the groves of the design, creating an image when the paper is pressed against the plate. A limited number of prints are made before the plate is destroyed. This piece is one of a hundred and fifty. The longer I keep it, the more valuable it becomes. Besides, it’s been over a year since my last vacation and I’m ready to implode. What the hell, it’s only money! My money!”
“Thanks for the art lesson. Can we go now?” Kate sighed.
Kate and I were traveling together for the hundredth time. As best friends go, she is wonderful, funny, honest, and smart, but trying to explain the theory of collecting art to her is a lost cause. Her family legacy is dirt, thousands of acres of it. Land, not landscapes.

“Deej, did you notice the guy serving champagne at the auction?” Kate asked.
“You mean him?” I said, acknowledging the bartender turned Speedo jock spraying his oversized pecs with tanning oil.
“Yes, him. Don’t point,” she hissed.
“What about him?”
“Did you see the way he was working the room, including the auctioneer? I did notice he was admiring your picture.”
“Oh? Did you happen to notice if he was bidding against me?”
